687,597. Sewing-needles. EVERETT & CO., Ltd., S. & R. J. Aug. 17, 1951 [Aug. 23, 1950; July 11, 1951], Nos. 20885/50 and 16456/51. Class 112. A surgical needle comprising a core 2 of corrodible metal surrounded by a corrosion-resistant shell 1, as described in Specification 670,199, has part of the core removed for a short distance at the point and replaced by fusible corrosionresisting material 6 to protect the core; similar material may also be run into a cavity at the other end for the same purpose. A metal, such as zinc, or a thermoplastic resin, such as nylon, may be used; in the former case the needle may afterwards be gilded or otherwise plated with corrosion-resistant metal. If resin is used at the butt end, the suture 8 may be secured by the resin 7 acting as cement. The needle point is formed in the hard metal 1 by grinding off the end at an angle as shown, and may be brought to an axial position by bending the end portion of the needle. A needle of triangular section may be used. The required part of the core may be removed by drilling, by dissolving in acid, or by electrolysis.
