Class 112 [Also in Group XXII] A surgical needle is made by grinding two flat surfaces 4, 5 on a cylindrical shank 1 to form both a point and also a single cutting edge 6. The angle B which edge 6 makes with the needle axis, and the included angle C between the surfaces 4, 5 both lie within a range of from 10 degrees to 60 degrees. In a curved needle said surfaces are formed respectively on the inside and outside of the curve. The suture may be attached either by swaging or by drilling the needle end, inserting the suture, and squeezing the needle and suture together.
