Abstract

In a process for the production of carboxylic acids by a submerged oxidative fermentation of primary alcohols in aqueous solutions, the substrate is aerated uninterruptedly and in all parts of said substrate during the whole period of fermentation by means of oxygen-containing gases. The liquid to be fermented may be inoculated by means of bacteria deposited on carrier material. As substrates all aqueous solutions of primary alcohols, e.g. ethyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol or mixtures may be used. For acetic acid fermentation washes containing ethyl alcohol, e.g. washes produced by diluting distilled alcohol of any commercial degree of purity or washes in the form of liquids produced by alcoholic fermentation without a preliminary distillation, even liquids containing relatively large quantities of soluble non-volatile compositions and having relatively low content of alcohol, e.g. cider wine, fruit wine and malt wash may be used.
