Abstract

686,720. Internal shoe-drum brakes. SHEEPBRIDGE ENGINEERING, Ltd. Nov. 6, 1951 [Nov. 7, 1950], No. 27197/50. Class 103 (i). The wheel of a rail vehicle, particularly a mine car, which is rotatable upon its axle, has a radially flanged rail engaging periphery on its outer face and on its inner face an annular recess in which is mounted a brake comprising a pair of brake shoes 17 expandable into engagement with the inner surface of the wheel rim by a cam 23 and lever 25. The back plate 19 on which the shoes are mounted is effective to prevent the entry of dust or dirt into the space enclosing the brake. The axle box 21, to which the plate 19 is secured, may, after removal of the set-screw 30, be slid along the axle to permit the withdrawal of the shoes.
