Brakes, arrangement and disposition of.-In an electromagnetic brake for the front wheels of road vehicles, the brake block or ring and the member carrying the winding or windings are secured one to the wheel or its hub and the other to the stub axle. As shown in Fig. 1, a brake block 11 secured to the wheel 10 by a spring 12 is adapted to engage an annular member 3 secured to the stub axle and having a magnetizing winding 7. Ir. another form, the member 3 is secured to the wheel hub and the block to an arm on the stub axle. The block engages the inner periphery of the members in this case. As shown in Fig. 5, the member 2 secured to the stub axle 1 has a number of windings 21 one or more of which may be energized to vary the braking action. The disc 24 which engages the member 2 is mounted by bolts 15 sliding against the action of springs 18 in the cover plate 17 secured to the wheel. The disc 24 has a number of radial strips 26 of frictional material. The member 2 may have an annular groove formed in its face and the engaing face of the member 24 be correspondingly shaped. The brake switch may operate in canjunction with the hand or foot brake.
