Abstract

686,350. Liquid-fuel burners. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd. Oct. 18, 1951 [Dec. 2, 1950], No. 29553/50. Class 75(i) [Also in Group XII] A liquid-fuel combustion chamber, e.g. for use in a gas turbine engine, includes a duct 14b, Fig. 3, for fast moving air to be heated, a rotatable disc 18 mounted at the upstream end of a flame chamber 16 within the duct 14b. The disc 18 having a concave, generally frusto-conical stepped face to which liquid fuel is supplied to travel outwardly thereacross to the periphery thereof, and means for passing some of the air from the duct 14b into the flame chamber 16. The said means may comprise an annular wall 15 surrounding the upstream end of the flame chamber 16 and directing air through apertures 23 in the latter. The liquid fuel is supplied through a pipe 19 to an aerial well 20 in the member 18 having a lip 21 over which the liquid is centrifuged and passes as a thin film on to the stepped face where it is vaporized by the heat in the flame chamber. The steps 22 may be undercut, and a scraper may be provided for removing deposits therefrom. The flame chamber may contain an annular baffle for directing the air passing through the holes 23 on to the disc 18. In another construction the flame chamber 16a, Fig. 5, is formed with inwardly and forwardly directed radial pockets 26 having holes 23a on the upstream side for directing air on to the member 18. In a further construction the upstream end 16c, Fig. 8, is provided with holes 23b for the admission of combustion air, the disc member 18a having its stepped face directed upstream and having rings of holes 32 for the passage of the vaporized fuel-air mixture. Liquid fuel passing through the holes 32 is collected by, and vaporized by heat from, rings 33. The rings of holes in the member 18c may, alternatively, be provided by tubes 34, Fig. 9, which project from the upstream surface of the member 18c and replace the steps 22. An annular combustion chamber provided with an annular rotary vaporizing disc is also described. In all the constructions the vaporizing disc may be rotated by means of air vanes or be mechanically driven.
