Abstract

585,343. Gas turbines. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., and HEPPNER, F. A. M. Sept. 29, 1942, Nos. 13631/42, 15665/42 and 822/43. [Class 110 (iii)] In a contra-rotational gas turbine plant, primary air from the compressor 11 is diverted by centrifugally acting blade portions 19, and passes through an annular space 22, past swirlproducing blades 24 into a combustion chamber 16. The fuel is thrown in a radial sheet, transverse to the current of primary air, from a valve 23 which is opened by the pressure of the fuel supply. Ignition is started by a heater 30 which withdraws into a covering tube when the airpressure on piston 31 overcomes a spring 33. Secondary air passes from the compressor into a chamber 12 and surrounds the tubes 14 which lead from the combustion chamber to the turbine 17. The secondary air enters through perforations 15 and mixes with the combustion products. In the construction shown in Fig., 6, the primary air passes through the space 59 and blades 62 and the secondary air passes through the chamber 65 and holes 64 in tubes 14. In a third form the chamber 65 is continued by a sheet metal extension and the tubes 58 are replaced by an annular passage between annular walls which are corrugated where they reach the sheet metal extension and thereby provide passages for the secondary air to enter the main gas flow.
