Abstract

686,148. Powder metallurgy. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK. May 9, 1951 [May 25, 1950], No. 10882/51. Class 83 (iv). A process for making plates for alkaline accumulators or other porous metal articles comprises bringing a metal powder, having a piled weight of less than two kilograms per litre into intimate contact with a salt of a more electropositive metal and then sintering the powder, preferably in a hydrogen atmosphere. Nickel powder obtained by the decomposition of nickel carbbnyl and having a piled weight of 0.6 kilograms per litre is copper plated by heating for an hour at 50‹ C. in a copper nitrate solution. The moist powder is then charged into a plate mould and sintered in hydrogen first at 500‹ C. and then at 1000‹ C. to form a nickel-copper plate having a pore volume of 85 per cent.
