Abstract
685,881. Control of several motors. CONE AUTOMATIC MACHINE CO., Inc. Sept. 14, 1950 [Sept. 15, 1949], No. 22630/50. Class 38 (iii) [Also in Groups XXII, XXIV and XXX] In an automatic lathe (see Group XXII), three electric motors SM, HM, M, are connected in a single control system which is operated partly by push-buttons and, in part, automatically. The electric motor M rotates the lathe spindle. A stock feeding carriage is moved by the reversible motor SM, and fluidpressure for operating the machine is supplied by pumps rotated by the motor HM. Electrical means control hydraulic reversing valves by means of solenoid-actuated racks engaging pinions on the valves. Duplicate electric control panels are provided on the back and front of the machine. The main motor M, is started by a push-button 510 and the motor HM by a switch 535. Initially, switches LS4 to 7 are closed by tool slides in their retracted positions. A switch 560 is then closed by the operator and, when a dog on a main camshaft closes a switch LS1, the slides begin their forward strokes. Three of the slides are returned when a switch LS3 is actuated by a main cam-shaft. The fourth slide is returned similarly by a switch LS2. A further cam on the shaft then actuates a switch LS10 to move a hydraulic valve and rotate a stock stop into position. Closing of a switch FOR by the operator energises the motor SM for a time pre-determined by a delay switch 669, a slipping-clutch operating when the work has contacted the stock stop. When the carriage reaches the forward limit, a switch LS9 is actuated, the machine is stopped, and the motor SM is automatically reversed. The operator may then remove any stock-end and start the machine again.
