Abstract

781,658. Lathe details. RYDER & SON, Ltd., T. Jan. 9, 1956 [March 21, 1955], No. 8130/55. Class 83 (3). Indexing-means for the work-turret of a multi-spindle automatic-lathe comprises an electric-motor j, Fig. 1, which drives the turret c in the forward indexing-direction until it reaches a point slightly beyond the next tooling- station, whereupon the turret is stopped by switching-off the electric-motor and by the operation of a hydraulic-motor v which drives the turret in the reverse direction until it is arrested by a locating-catch h, against which it is pressed hydraulically until the next forward-movement of the table. The turret is rotated by gearing from the motor j and shaft k. The hydraulic-motor is connected to the latter and a solenoid-controlled valve u is opened to permit the hydraulic-motor to run freely when the electric-motor is driving. On approaching a new index-position the locating- catch h springs into one of the recesses g, the electric-motor is automatically stopped, and the hydraulic-motor started to reverse the rotation of shaft k and bring the edge of the locating-recess hard against the catch h. Pressure-fluid continues to flow to the motor v and a pressure-relief-valve is incorporated to prevent build-up of pressure. A further fluidpressure-motor w then operates to move a piston y in a cylinder x to operate a wedgecatch i, which holds the turret rigidly during working. Brakes. A driving-shaft o of the gearing may be provided with a one-way wedging braking-device 12, 13, Fig. 4, operated by a solenoid 11 which helps to bring the turret to rest on cessation of the electric-motor drive, but which has no effect on the fluid-motor drive.
