In a threshing machine of the kind comprising rollers 3 between which the crop is passed, preferably crop end first, and a rotating beater 6 located in juxtaposition to the exit end of the rollers and which is driven at a greater speed than the rollers, the rotating beater comprises a drum fitted with a plurality of beater elements 7 which beat the crop end of the " straw " as it emerges from the rollers, the elements extending tangentially or substantially tangentially from the drum and being arranged so that their outer ends trail behind their anchored ends, and means are provided for separating the seed from the chaff and " straw ". As shown the crops are fed between conveyer belts 2 crop end first to the crushing rollers and on emerging therefrom are threshed by the beater 6 rotating at a greater speed than the rollers, so that the seed, chaff and " straw fall on to a shoot 4 and pass to a reciprocating sieve 5 from which the " straw " is removed by raking means 10 whilst the seeds and chaff pass through to a hopper 9. From the latter seed and chaff are carried by an air current through pipe 12 and discharged into a winnowing chamber 14 where the chaff is blown to the outlet 17 and the seeds fall down pipe 15 into the inner of one of two or more inclined rotary sieves 19, 20 within a non- perforated outer casing 21, are separated and discharged at 19a, 20a or 21a according to size.
