Abstract

685,233. Sliding windows. HALLAM, SLEIGH and CHESTON, Ltd. June 7, 1951 [July 28, 1950], No. 18861/50. Class 20(iii) A vertically sliding window 1 is counterbalanced by a roller 7 or part carried by a slide 9, 28 which is housed within a member 10, 29 at the top of the window panel and maintained by a spring 12, and 31 in engagement with a curved or inclined stationary track 6 at the side of the body in which the window slides, the roller, &c. moving over the track when the window is raised or lowered and the track being so shaped and positioned that a lifting force is exerted on the roller to oppose the weight of the window at different positions of adjustment. The panel 1, e.g. of a public service vehicle, is movable on guide ribs 2 on the sides 3 of the fixed frame. In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the tracks which diverge downwardly comprise tapered metal plates 4 parallel to the plane of the panel having an inner edge of parabolic curvature and formed with a flange 5 the outer face of which forms the track. Each roller 7 rotates about a pin 8 projecting from a slide bar 9 housed in a horizontal tube 10 integral with the top bar 11, and the aligned slide bars are connected by a tension spring 12, or may be fitted with separate tension or compression springs. In an alternative arrangement the rollers are urged outwardly by a single or separate compression springs to engage the inner surfaces of the guide tracks which diverge upwardly, liners being provided to space the springs from the wall of the tube in which they are contained. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8, the panel moves into a well 27, the grooved rollers 7 being covered by slide members 28 slidable in a tube 29 and urged by compression springs 31 into engagement with the parabolic tracks 6. If desired a curved track may be provided on one side only, the other track being vertical, the rollers may be replaced by shoes, and the slide member may be housed in guides other than tubes.
