Abstract

684,669. Combustion apparatus. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Oct. 21, 1947, No. 28186/47. Class 75(i) [Also in Group XII] In a combustion apparatus in which combustion has to be supported by a ducted flow of combustion supporting gas of flame extinguishing velocity, the flow is divided in the ducting, a metered portion of the gas flowing via a diffusion passage to a stabilized pilot flame zone formed by an apertured baffle producing on its downstream side a localized reverse flow circulation, the fuel for the pilot zone being introduced upstream of the baffle so that it is carried by the metered gas and mixed therewith in the diffusion passage. The remainder of the gas by-passes the diffusion passage and pilot flame zone and mixes with the combustion gases from the latter zone on its downstream side. The fuel may be pulverulent or liquid. In Fig. 1 an outer duct 1 receives a high-speed air flow in direction A the inner duct 2 passing a metered part of the air its speed being increased by the neck 3. Jet 4 sprays fuel counter-current to the air, the two mixing in the diffusion passage 5, passing through the baffle 6 and being ignited by the plug 7 in the dead air pocket 8, burning in the portion 9. The air from the annular duct mixes with the combustion gases from the portion 9. The fuel is sprayed in by the ring jets 10 and 11 each jet giving a non- uniform distribution the patterns of which are complementary so as to give an overall uniform distribution. In another form of apparatus the combustion gases from the flame zone pass through a convergent duct having ports to enable the unmetered air to mix with the combustion gases. Specification 684,670 is referred to.
