Abstract

The invention comprises organo-silicon compounds of the general formula <FORM:0684102/IV (b)/1> wherein each R is an alkyl or monocyclic aryl radical and each Z is an alkoxy radical, and a process for the preparation of the above compounds by reacting in the liquid phase an alkali metal and the compounds XCH2SiRZ2 and R2SiY2, wherein R and Z have the above significance, X is a halogen atom and each Y is an alkoxy radical or a halogen atom. The preferred R radical is the methyl radical, but R can represent any alkyl radical up to the octadecyl radical or the phenyl, tolyl or xylyl radical. Preferably the radical X is chlorine or bromine and the radical Y is the ethoxy radical. In the examples the compound (C2H5O)2CH3SiCH2Si (CH3)2SiCH3(OC2H5)2 is prepared from the compounds ClCH2(CH3)Si (OC2H5)2 and (CH3)2SiCl2, and the compound <FORM:0684102/IV (b)/2> is prepared from the compounds ClCH2C6H5Si (OC2H5)2 and C6H5(CH3)Si (OC2H5)2. Chloromethylmethyldichlorosilane is prepared by the direct chlorination of dimethyldichlorosilane or by chlorinating methyltrichlorosilane and then reacting the product with a methyl Grignard reagent. Similar compounds may be prepared by using other Grignard reagents, e.g. ethyl- or octadecyl Grignard reagents or aryl Grignard reagents such as the phenyl Grignard reagent, in place of the methyl Grignard reagent referred to above. The chlorine atoms attached to silicon in the products may be replaced by alkoxy groups by reaction with alcohols.
