Abstract

A composition suitable for lining mineral oil containers comprises a primary component which is insoluble in hydrocarbons and mineral oils but soluble in alcohols or esters, and an alcohol and ester soluble softening and plasticising agent which is resistant to mineral oil. The primary component is preferably oxidised resin, acaroid resin, or beechwood tar pitch, which may have been extracted with an aliphatic hydrocarbon before or after mixing with the plasticiser which may be a synthetic wax, triacetin, or beechwood tar oil. Fillers such as silicic acid, activated silicic acid, carbon black, red ferric oxide, or minium may also be added. The composition may be thinned with methyl or ethyl alcohol and may be applied in the molten state by brush, spatula or by hot spraying.
