683,719. Gasifying carbonaceous materials ; combustible gas mixtures. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 15, 1950 [June 15, 1949], No. 14953/50. Addition to 683,318. Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii) In a process for the generation of fuel gas from a carbonaceous solid, coal, coke or oil shale from a hopper 2 is mixed in particle form with water to form a slurry in a mixer 4 and is passed by a pump 7 through a heating coil 8 in which the liquid is vaporised and the dispersion attains a speed of at least 60 feet per second to disintegrate the coal as in the parent Specification ; the steam and powdered coal so formed are passed at 600‹-1400‹F. through a conduit 9 to a methanisation vessel 10 in which a turbulent fluidised bed of carbonaceous particles at 900‹-1800‹F. is formed and hydrogen and carbon monoxide are introduced through the conduit 9, the methanised gas and volatilised constituents of the coal being drawn off at 12. Char from the vessel 10 is withdrawn through line 17 and introduced into a gasification vessel 18 with unobstructed flow to which oxygen and steam at 620‹F. are added from a pipe 19, the hydrogen and carbon monoxide so formed passing at 2000‹-3000‹F. through the conduit 9 to carry the powdered coal to the vessel 10. The vessels 9 and 10 are operated at a pressure of 150-750 lbs. per sq. in., the vessel 10 being run at a lower pressure and having a cooling coil 11. The methanised gas passes through the pipe 12 to a dust separator 13, the fine particles from which are added through line 14 to the coal, and the hot gases pass through pipe 15 into heat exchange with the coil 8 containing the coal slurry. The gases pass to a pipe 16 for removal of water, oils and tar. Heat from the gasification zone may also be used to heat the slurry. Iron oxide as catalyst for the methanisation and fluxing agents for the ash such as lime, silica or alumina may be added to the slurry. Slag is removed as a liquid from the gasifier 18 at an outlet 20. Some of the vapour or of the solid may be removed from the slurry after passing through the heating zone, and the steam so withdrawn may be passed to the gasification zone. The slurry may be passed in indirect heat exchange with the fluidised bed of char in the methanisation zone. Specification 651,370 is referred to.
