Abstract

682,519. Anµsthetic apparatus. MACINTOSH, R. R., and EPSTEIN, H. G. Nov. 3, 1950 [Nov. 16, 1949], No. 29354/49. Class 81 (ii). An inhaler of the type in which evaporation of an anaesthetic or analgesic liquid is brought about as the patient inhales, comprises a mixing chamber having an intake, consisting of one or more inlets from a vaporising chamber, which has a flow resistance larger than an intake from the outside, which also consists of one or more inlets, the flow resistance rate characteristics of the intakes being such as to reduce or exclude fluctuations in the composition of the mixture due to changes in respiratory volume and/or rate. The vaporising chamber comprises a waterjacketed container 1 in the bottom of which is an inverted cup-shaped member 3 also containing water, the liquid to be vaporised being contained in an annular space 5 between the container walls and the cup-shaped member 3. Part of the inner surface of the container 1 is covered with capillary active material 6 and an overflow pipe 8 is provided. Air entering the vaporising chamber carries vapour through apertures 11 into the mixing chamber 12. A baffle in the form of a depending skirt 9 and having perforations 16 is provided. Air enters the mixing chamber 12 directly through an intake 13 and another intake 14, the latter being provided with a manually operated valve 15 which provides for two predetermined concentrations of vapour in the inhaled air. The mixing chamber 12 is provided with an inhaler tube 23. The apertures 11 forming the vapour intake to the mixing chamber 12 are in the form of cylinders 17 having small holes 18. Alternative forms of aperture 11 are described. A thermometer 19 dips into the liquid to be vaporised. A masking device 20 operated by a rotatable knob 21 controls the combination of apertures 11 to be closed in accordance with prevailing temperatures. In a modification (not shown), the cup-shaped member in the bottom of the vaporising chamber is extended upwards into the depending skirt.
