Abstract

682,462. Liquid filters. WEINHOLD, K. March 2, 1950 [Oct. 1, 1948], No. 5329/50. Class 46 A liquid filter is provided on the soliddeposition side with a band formed of independent cells open at each end and when the band is used for retaining liquid for washing the deposit free from filtrate the band is in contact with the layer of deposit so as to form liquid-tight joints therewith., When the band is to be used for removing the filter deposit, it is in contact with the filtering medium so that the solid matter is deposited in the cells and when the band is removed from the filtering medium the deposit is removed .with it and may be separated from the cellular band by pneumatic, hydraulic or mechanical means. The cellular band may be endless for use with drum or endless filtering media or it may be in plane sheet or other form to conform to the filtering surface of the filtering medium with which it is used. As shown in Fig. 1 the washing band 3 is in contact with the deposit on the rotating drum filtering surface 1 over a part of the surface under such. pressure that the band forms a liquid-tight joint with the layer of deposit and moves at the speed of the drum. Washing liquid is supplied from the conduit 5 The band may be made from sheet metal. e.g., zig-zag strips secured to transverse walls in such a way that the cellular band is sufficiently flexible to adapt itself to the circumference of the drum and be guided around guiding rollers 4. As shown in Fig. 6 adjacent rows of transversely disposed cells formed by welding U-shaped strips 17 to the transverse plates 16 are hingedly connected together as by a hinge 18 connected to adjacent transverse plates 16 which are normally parallel to each other. By the hinge joints the band can conform to a curved surface without distortion of the cells. The cells may be perpendicular to the plane of the band or they may be inclined at an angle thereto so as effectively to increase the washing reach of the drum. Liquid pervious material 15 such as felt may be inserted at the bottom of each cell. The cells are provided with overflow openings 19 near their outer ends. Alternately, the band may consist of flexible, permeable or absorptive material such as rubber, as a kind of rubber sponge with the cells, pores or channels running only from face to face of the band. In the case of a flexible band. e.g. of rubber, the walls of the cells perpendicular to the plane of the band may be reinforced with e.g. sheets of linen.
