Abstract

681,986. Making files, rasps, &c. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 14, 1949 [Aug. 14, 1948], No. 18854/48. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Forging.-In a forging or swaging machine of the type comprising radially slidable dies oper. able by a rotary member, diametrically opposed carriers for the dies are engaged in turn by means carried by the rotary member so that the engaged die-carriers move inwards towards the work while the disengaged carriers move outwards. The dies 17, Fig. 2, of a machine for forging the tang ends of files are T-shaped in cross-section and mounted in T-shaped grooves in carriers 11 which slide radially in a fixed head 14 integral with a shaft 2, Fig. 1, rigidly mounted to the machine frame 1. Each carrier 11 of an opposite pair is hammered at its chamfered head 11a by a pair of diametricallyopposed rollers 7, 8 on the inner face of a hollow fly-wheel 4 which is rotatable on the shaft 2 and driven through a belt 5 by an electric motor 6a. The inner ends 15 of the die-carriers 11 are chamfered at 45 degrees so that the disengaged die pair is driven outwards by the inwardlymoving die pair, rubber buffers 20 being fitted in grooves 19 on the inner face of the head 14 to reduce noise. Spacers 16a above the die heads may be increased in thickness to allow for wear of the dies. In one modification the dies may be pivoted to the die-carrier and in another modification toggle plates pivoted on the fixed head and rocked by the rollers 7, 8 may be interposed between the rollers and the die-carriers so that a carrier engaged by one end of a toggleplate moves inwards while that engaged by the other end moves outwards. Work handling and feeding.-The file blank 25, Fig. 1, may be located in the correct position relative to the dies by the abutment of its end against a recess 24 on a sliding carrier 22 adjustable by a screw 31 relative to a second carrier 23 on which the blank is clamped by fixed and movable jaws 26, 27 actuated by an air cylinder 28. The work is fed to the dies by a second air cylinder 29, both cylinders being controlled by latch valves 32, 33 so that the work is clamped before being fed to the dies. Alternatively a completely automatic device may be used for feeding blanks to the dies, the blanks being fed to longitudinal recesses 69, Fig. 11, on an intermittently-rotated drum 65 from a tilting shoot 75 by a pusher plate 87, both of which are intermittently actuated by a cam 81 on the machine drive. The drum 65 is rotated by a Geneva mechanism and as each blank reaches the uppermost position it is clamped by a jaw 90 operated from a cam 95 in the machine drive and the drum and jaw 90 are fed forward towards the dies by a sliding carriage 52 on which they are mounted, the movement of the carriage being obtained from a cam track on a drum 49 into which a following roller on the base of the carriage projects. After completion of the forging operation the carriage is withdrawn and the jaw 90 released, the work being ejected, as the drum rotates, by the trailing edges of rocker arms 70 pivoted on the drum and rocked by a roller 74a which engages a hump 74 on the leading end of the arm.
