Abstract
1,152,602. Stamping. E. W. BLISS CO. 16 Jan., 1967 [1 Feb., 1966], No. 2233/67. Heading B3Q. A die flanging machine for can bodies having one end closed comprises at least one pair of co-operably aligned and axially spaced tool heads one of which being reciprocably mounted for movement relative to the other, feeding means for receiving the can bodies and moving the same in sequence between the aligned tool heads from a receiving station to a discharge station, a flanging die mounted on one of the tool heads adapted to enter the open end of a can body to perform a flanging operation thereon, means to reciprocate a tool head to force the can body into the flanging die at a speed abruptly increasing at the instant at which the flanging operation commences so as to impact form the metal at a sufficiently high rate to avoid excessively straining it in the flanged area, and extracting means for withdrawing the can body from the flanging die after completion of the flanging operation. Can bodies 15 closed at one end are fed by a spiral 12 and star wheel 14 into can-receiving recesses 18 of a pair of turret discs 16, each disc being bolted to a turret 25 or 27 on a main drive shaft 30. The recesses 18 are aligned with tool head slides 34, 35 in the turrets 25, 27 respectively, which slides are movable to and from one another, as the turrets rotate, by fixed cams 37, 38. In operation, as the turrets rotate the tool head slides move towards one another, a flanging die 83 on the tool head 38 begins to enter the open end of the can body while a can stop 73 on the tool head 34 engages the back of the can body 15. The speed of the tool head 34 is then sharply increased, the cam 37 being appropriately shaped, to propel the can body 15 on to the flanging die 83 to deform the metal at a high rate. As the turrets continue to rotate fingers 75 associated with the tool heads 34 move in to grip the end of the can body, such movement being controlled by a fixed cam 55. The can body is extracted from the die 83 as the tool heads 34, 35 move apart and is discharged at 24 from the turret discs 16.
