Abstract
681,720. Underground gasification of coal. MASTERMAN, C. A., and WILKINS, E. T. Dec. 1, 1950 [Nov. 7, 1949], No. 28519/49. Class 55 (ii) An area for combustion in an underground system for gasifying coal is established or extended by ,forcibly pumping a fluid or causing a fluid to permeate through the coal, and/or between the coal seam and its roof or floor. Compressed air is supplied at a pressure of about 100 lbs. per sq. in. to a bore hole or one or both of a pair of adjacent bore holes. The bore holes are preferably lined and may be close to an existing underground system of gasification. In a modification water or other liquids is forced into one or a pair of bore holes and allowed to permeate through the coal. The liquid used may contain solvents such as pyridene or acids.
