Abstract

High molecular weight solid hydrocarbons are prepared by reacting CO and H2 in a mol. ratio of 2 : 1-12.5 : 1, in the presence of water, an acidic reagent to maintain a pH of less than 2, and a ruthenium catalyst, at 150-300 DEG , preferably 180-225 DEG C., and 200-1000 atm. Ruthenium may be added as metal, an oxide, carbonyl or salt, e.g. a carboxylate, alone or on a support. The amount is desirably 0.001-20 per cent by weight RuO2 on the total reaction mixture. The acidic reagent may be phosphoric, hydrochloric, sulphuric, oxalic, hydroxyacetic, chloracetic or benzene sulphonic acids, cresol, phenol, or hydrated BF3. A dispersing agent and agitation may be employed. The synthesis gas may first be deoxygenated and desulphurized. The effect on the product of varying the CO : H2 ratio is exemplified, 85 per cent H3PO4+15 per cent H2O being employed. The products melt at about 126-129 DEG C., have intrinsic viscosities above 0.3, and are used in the manufacture of chewing gum, impregnated paper, foils, fibres, moulded products, adhesives, bags, capsules for rubber mix materials which are added complete to the mix, dispersions for coating, blends with polythene or polyisobutene, and chlorosulphonated or chlorinated hydrocarbons.
