Abstract

681,379. Filters. WARDLE, J., and WARNIC ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Dec. 7,1950 [Dec. 8, 1949], No. 31597/49. Class 46 An edge strainer of the kind consisting of a pile of spaced plates rotatably mounted within a casing 1 comprises a cylinder 8, Fig. 1, a plurality of ring-like plates 9, Fig. 2, supported about the cylinder and shaped to provide longitudinal channels 15, means within the cylinder 8 to provide one or more further straining stages such as a magnetic strainer 31, and means such as apertures 16 at the lower end of the cylinder, Fig. 1, and openings 17 at its upper end so that liquid which has been strained can flow along the channels 15 into the interior of the cylinder and thence towards the outlet 3 of the casing 1. The magnetic strainer 31 is disposed so that the liquid flows around and past it. The upper end of the cylinder 8 is rotated in upper and lower openings of a sleeve 4 by a shaft 25 having a boss 29 through which extends a cross pin 30 engaging in slots communicating with the periphery of the top of the cylinder. The lower end of the cylinder rotates in an annular recess in a plate 18 secured to the sleeve 4 by rods 19, whose lower ends are positioned by lugs 20 so that the sleeve 4, cylinder 8, plates 9, plate 18 and rods 19 may be removed as a unit when screws 7 are withdrawn. By releasing a cover plate 27 from the sleeve 4 it may be removed together with the shaft 25, the magnetic strainer 31 and any other filters carried by the shaft without disturbing the cylinder 8; the cross-pin 30 disengages from the slots in the cylinder 8. The ring-like plates 9 are secured with intervening washers on rods 11, Fig. 2, between an end plate 13 and a flange 6A of the cylinder into which the rods are screwed. Fixed scraper blades 23, Fig. 2, are interposed between adjacent rings 9. The filter means provided in addition to or instead of the magnetic filter 31 may be formed of or include chamois leather, fabric, felt, paper or the like, and extend across the cylinder 8. In Fig. 5, the cylinder 37 engages in an annular recess in the underside of a sleeve 34 having an inlet port 35 and outlet port. 36 and at its lower end engages about a central circular portion of a plate 41 secured to the sleeve 34 by rods 40. It is rotated by a handle 46 acting through a shaft 45 and a key 44 co-operating with a central slot 43. Communication between the interior of the cylinder 37 and the outlet 36 is provided via a fine filter unit 49 carrying fabric or the like and holes 51 provided in both the upper end of the filter unit 49 and the upper end wall 42 of the cylinder 37. A magnetic strainer may be mounted on the spindle 48 to provide three stages of straining within the casing 33. Each straining plate 9 may comprise a number of arcuate segments, Fig. 6 (not shown), each having an apertured central projection 10 and, at each end, a half projection formed to engage one of the rods 11.
