Abstract
681,282. Drum brakes. INDIA RUBBER, GUTTA PERCHA & TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., TARRIS, F. J., and WEBB, D. Jan. 23, 1951 [Jan. 31, 1950], No. 2539/50. Class 103 (i). A brake comprising a frame 1, a shoe or shoes 8, a pair of expansible tubes 4, 5 disposed side by side between the shoe or shoes and the frame and arranged to be expanded by fluid pressure to apply the shoe or shoes to a relatively movable friction surface (not shown), and also comprising spring means acting in opposition to the tubes to disengage the shoe or shoes on release of fluid pressure, is characterized in that at least one of the shoes has a pillar 12 secured thereto and extending between the two tubes through the frame, away from the friction surface; the spring means 13 acting between the pillar and the frame. As shown, the tubes 4, 5 of an internal expanding drum brake are connected to a common fluid supply 7. A plurality of shoes 8 carry bars 10 of friction material disposed in lateral slots in the arcuate shoe surface. The spring 13 engages a recess 14 in the frame 1 and a collet 15 which has a slot 17 allowing it to be slip over the end 16 of the pillar 12 and rotated through 90 degrees, whereupon the pillar head 16 engages slots 18 and is locked therein. The post 12 is a sliding fit in the frame 1 and serves as an anchor for the shoe. Side flanges 9 on the shoes 8 co-operate with the frame 1 to guide the shoes radially.
