Abstract
A magnesium-base alloy, suitable for the production of castings of substanially finished shape or wrought articles, has the following composition: Li over 0.2 but less than 5.7 per cent; Zr 0.4-0.9 per cent; Mg the balance. Of the proportion of Zr at least 0.3 per cent is present in a condition in which it is readily soluble in an aqueous solution consisting of 30 ccs HCl (specific gravity 1.16) in 85 ccs of water, sufficient acid being added during dissolution to maintain the initial acid concentration. Elements which form compounds with Zr which are insoluble in the molten alloy should not be present. The alloy may contain one or more of the following elements, the Mg content of the alloy being at least 80 per cent: Zn up to 12.0 per cent; Cd up to 19.4 per cent; Th up to 10.0 per cent; Hg up to 10.0 per cent; Ag up to 10.0 per cent; Pb, Ca, Sr, Ba up to 2.0 per cent each; Be up to 0.1 per cent; Na less than 0.1 per cent. Specification 652,223 is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also alloys containing 0.2 per cent Li and 5.7 per cent Li.
