Class 52(i) [Also in Groups XV and XVII] An apparatus particularly for filing gramophone records 1 but which may be used for filing documents &c. comprises a housing adapted to accommodate a number of record-holding jackets 2, each jacket having an offset shoulder 15 adapted to co-operate with stop means 13 on the housing to limit the extent to which the jacket can be withdrawn from the housing and being open only at one edge which has hinged flaps 16, 17, Fig. 5 of different widths. In one form, Fig. 1, the jackets 2 are disposed vertically on a plate 4 slidable to a limited extent on a base-plate 5 in a housing 3. The flap 17 is extended by an indicating tab 18 and the tabs of the various jackets may be progressively stepped. Beneath the base-plate 5 is a bottom plate 6 providing a space 7 which accommodates a plate 8 having a flange 9 at one end and a leaf spring 11 at the other. In use, the plate 4 is pulled out to the limited extent permitted, so that all the tabs and flaps are outside the housing 3. The jacket 2 corresponding to the selected record is then pulled out until its shoulder 15 engages the stops 13. If the plate 8 is pulled out, the record may be extracted and allowed to rest on a strip 14 of flexible material on the plate. The plate 8 may be used as a cover for the housing 3 by. hooking the flange 9 on to a flange 10 on the plate 5 and latching the spring 11 on to a flange 12 at the top of the housing. Springs in the housing press laterally on the jackets to hold them in vertical position. In one modification Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the jackets are disposed horizontally in metal compartments, a number of which can be removably superposed to form a cabinet for which a base and a top is provided. Each compartment is provided with a slidable bottom corresponding to plate 4 but having a pivoted front portion, and the jackets have shoulders as before to permit them to be withdrawn sufficiently for the flaps to extend beyond the bottom plate. In another form, Fig. 5, a series of plates 33 forming compartments are slid vertically between the back and stops 38 of a container 35 to form compartments, flanges 34 on each plate supporting the plate immediately above. The jackets 2 have shoulders 37, Fig. 6 (not shown) which engage the stops 38 to limit the extent to which they may be withdrawn. As shown in Fig. 8, the side edges of each jacket 2 have bent metallic strips 39 which slidably engage metal slideways 40, a series of which are superposed at each side of a container 41. In a further form, Fig. 11, the jackets 2 are normally disposed horizontally in a drawer 45 having a closed front 53 and an open inner end 54. On the bottom of the drawer is a handle part 47 and a hook 46, whereby the drawer can be withdrawn and suspended in vertical position as shown on the front of the cabinet. The jackets are formed as before, except that on the flap 17 a strip 51 is provided which can be lifted to the position shown dotted when. the jacket is withdrawn to prevent the jacket from dropping back into the drawer.
