Description

April 8, 1952 H. M. REEVES RECIPE CARD HOLDER FOR STOVES Filed Dec. 50; 1947 R m w W.
I Herbert [h Reeves Z P Mwwp Patented Apr. 8, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RECIPE CARD HOLDER FOR STOVES Herbert M. Reeves, Kankakee, 111., assignor to Florence Stove Company, Gardner, Mass., a corporation. of Massachusetts Application December 30, 1947, Serial No. 794,761
1 Claim.
1 The invention relates to cookstoves of the type having utility compartments provided with closure panels and it is concerned more particularly with an improved holder for recipe cards or the like and the construction of the panels to support the card holder.
One object of the invention is to provide a closure panel and card holder construction whereby the holder may be hooked onto the panel in a manner which eifectually prevents accidental dislodgment, while permitting quick and easy removal of the holder to afford access to the cards.
Another object is to provide a holder for recipe cards or the like which is simple and inexpensive in construction, which affords adequate protection to the cards, particularly against spillage from pans on the top of the stove, and which is adapted to be supported within the utility compartment of the stove and conveniently accessible for reference to the cards filed therein.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary front view of a gas cookstove having a utility compartment closure panel adapted to accommodate and fitted with recipe card holders embodying the features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved card holder.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the card holder and the panel upon which it is supported.
For purposes of illustration, the invention has been shown as embodied in a gas cookstove 5 having a utility compartment 6 adapted to be closed by a panel 1. The panel 1 preferably comprises a flat metal sheet 8 having integral flanges 9 and along its side and top edges. In the I exemplary stove, the compartment 6 is fitted with a sliding drawer H and the panel I constitutes the front wall of this drawer. If desired the drawer may be dispensed with and the panel 1 hinged to the stove frame to serve as a door for the compartment 6.
In accordance with the invention, the panel I is constructed and arranged to support one or more holders I for recipe cards I6 or the like in a manner such that they are effectually enclosed within the compartment 6 when not in use, but are readily accessible and conveniently removable therefrom when it is desired to consult the cards. The particular panel illustrated is adapted to support four of the holders I5, each of which may be utilized for the filing of a group of the cards 16 pertaining to a selected class of recipes and designated by suitable lndicia on the holder. Preferably, the card holders are all alike and embody novel features of construction which simplify their production, which adapt them for cooperation with the panel I in a manner which prevents accidental dislodgement, which provide adequate protection for the cards filed therein, and which permit convenient withdrawal of the cards for examination.
The holders l5 may be made of any suitable material capable of being molded, stamped or otherwise shaped to the desired form. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, each holder comprises an elongated strip H of sheet material having forwardly turned flanges along opposite side edges. The flanges [8 have their end portions l9 turned inwardly and disposed substantially parallel to the body of the strip to form with the flanges l8 and the body of the strip, the four walls of a generally rectangular cardretaining pocket. A forwardly turned flange 20 on the bottom edge of the strip ll formsv the bottom wall of the pocket.
To shield the cards in the holders from spillage, as from pans on top of the stove, and to support the holder on the panel 1, the upper edge portion of the strip I! is formed with a flange 2| extending forwardly over the card pocket. Hook means is provided on the flange 2| whereby the holder may be detachably supported in suspended relation from a ledge provided on the panel I. The hook means comprises, in this instance, a downwardly turned lip 22 and the upper flange ll) of the panel constitutes the ledge with which the hook means cooperates. To this end, the flange is shaped to present an upwardly opening channel 23 adjacent its inner edge for the reception of the lip 22, whereby the holder is securely hooked to the panel. Preferably, the portion of the flange II] in which the channel 23 isformed is recessed or depressed, as indicated at 24, to permit the holders to clear the upper edge of the opening of the compartment 6 when the panel is closed.
In the particular embodiment of the holder illustrated, the end portions 19 of the side flanges I8 which form one wall of the card-retaining pocket are extended inwardly a sufiicient distance to engage the edge portions of the cards in the pocket to retain the cards in place while permitting convenient access to them when the holder is removed from the panel. To facilitate withdrawal of the cards from the pocket, the flanges l8 are terminated substantially below the flange 2|, in other words, the upper portion is cut away as indicated at 25. The lower portions of these flanges may also be cut away as indicated at 26, if desired.
To prevent objectionable swinging of the holder when the panel I is moved between open and closed positions, the flange at the bottom of the holder is made substantially wider than the flange 2| by which it is supported. Thus, when the holder is suspended from the channel 23, it is prevented from swinging to a vertical position by the flange 20 engaging the front wall 8 of the panel. Thus the weight of the holder and the cards filed therein tend to retain it in a slightly inclined or over-center position, as shown in Fig. 3 so that swinging of the holder is minimized.
When it is desired to consult a recipe card, the panel 1' is pulled or swung to the open position thereby exposing the upper ends of the holders l5 which preferably carry the indicia identifying the various group of cards filed therein. The selected holder may then be removed by simply lifting it from the ledge upon which it is supported. The group of cards 46 may be easily withdrawn from the holder either by inverting it or by inserting the finger below the stack and lifting it while the stack is tilted forwardly so as to clear the upper flange 2 l. Due to the separation of the wall memhere 19, the stack may be lifted free of the wall members without interference.
' It will be apparent from the foregoing that the invention provides means of a novel and advantageous character for filing recipe cards or the like in the utility compartmentof a cookstove. The invention provides novel holders for retaining groups of cards, and the closure panel for the utility compartment is constructed and arranged to support the holders in a manner which provides adequate protection for the cards while rendering them readily accessible for examination. In general, therefore, the invention provides a very convenient and attractive means for filing recipe or other cards.
I claim as my invention:
The combination with a sheet metal panel having an inwardly turned horizontally disposed marginal flange shaped to present an upwardly opening channel spaced inwardly from the panel, of a card holder comprising an elongated strip forming the rear wall of a card retaining pocket, integral flanges on the side and bottom edges of said strip forming side and bottom walls for said pocket, said side flanges having their end portions turned inwardly substantially parallel to the strip to form a partial front wall for said pocket, the upper edge portion of said strip bein extended forwardly over said pocket and terminating in a downwardly turned lip and adapted to engage in said channel to detachably support the holder in suspended relation from the panel flange, the flange at the bottom edge of said strip having a width substantially greater than the combined widths of the forwardly extended upper edge por-- tion of the strip and the portion of the marginal flange between said channel and the panel to enable it to engage the panel and thereby restrain the holder against swinging movement relative to the panel.
