Abstract

679,456. Sewing-machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). June 12, 1951, No. 13957/51. Class 112. [Also in Group XXV] Feed by wheels; presser-bars.-A belt-driven feed-wheel is carried by the presser-bar, and means are provided for neutralising the lateral thrust on the presser-bar. In the embodiment described, this feed-wheel is driven by connections from a shaft driving a lower feed-wheel. In the form shown the upper feed-wheel 44, Fig. 1, which is preferably slightly inclined to clear the needle, is mounted on an arm 97 on the presser-bar, and is driven from a vertical shaft 62 by a belt 65 passing over idler pulleys 67 and round a pulley on the feed-wheel spindle, the descending part of the belt lying parallel to the plane of the feed-wheel. The idler pulleys 67 are mounted on a bracket 69 pivoted at 75 in the plane of the horizontal part of the belt, and a rod 99 guided in the bracket and pressed on the arm 97 by a spring 101 counteracts the pull of the belt on the presser-bar, which might cause the latter to bind in its guides; the arrangement of the bracket 69 permits lifting of the presser-bar without affecting the belt. The arm 97 carrying the presser-wheel is carried by a sleeve 91, Fig. 5, rotatably mounted on the lower end of the presser-bar 78 so that the feedwheel can be swung clear of the work when required ; it is pressed upwards by a spring 92 abutting a screw in the end of the presser-bar to hold the feed-wheel yieldingly in its operative position by engagement of a tooth on the upper end of the sleeve with a notch in a member 88 clamped on the presser-bar. The presser-bar is hollow to receive its control spring 81 and a rod 82, adjustably fixed to the frame at the top to enable the spring pressure to be varied; it has fixed to it a lateral finger which slides in a forked guide to prevent its rotation, and the fingers of the guide may be pressed together by a screw to take up wear. The shaft 62, Fig. 1, is connected by a belt 60 to the lower end of a two-piece shaft 50 which is geared to the lower feed-wheel 43 and is driven intermittently through a one-way clutch 52 by a pitman 54 from an eccentric on the bed-shaft 18, the latter being belt-driven from the main shaft 10 and being spiral-geared to the vertical loop-taker shaft 37. Alternatively the shaft 62 and belt 60 may be dispensed with and the belt 65 extended over two sets of idler pulleys to the pulley 59. Frames.-The bed-plate 1 is strengthened by flanges, some of which form the sides of a lubricant chamber 27 containing the drive for the shafts 37, 50; the top of this chamber is closed by the post 5, which has a part 40 depending into the chamber to carry the lower end of the shaft 37, and the bottom by a member 28 which provides a bearing for the lower end of the shaft 50.
