Abstract
679,229. Automatic steering control systems. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. June 8, 1951 [June 21, 1950], No. 15529/50. Class 38 (iv). A safety device for an automatic pilot system of the rate/rate type, as disclosed in Specification 611,037, comprises a first switch operated by the gyroscope and a second switch operated by the control surface, incorrect actuation of the control surface switching off the system. A member 22 actuated by the rate of turn gyroscope 1 moves contact 23 or 24 away from a fixed contact 25 at either limit of its movement, and a corresponding member 18 actuated by the elevator 17 moves contacts 19, 20 relative to contact 21. Contacts 19, 23, and 23, 24, are interconnected so that when the rate of pitch is such as to open contact 23, appropriate actuation of the elevator results in opening of contact 19, connection being main. tained over contacts 20, 24, but incorrect actuation of the elevator breaks the connection. Similar contact arrangements 26 ... 31 and 32 ... 37 are provided for the other control channels, all three circuits being in series with a slugged relay 38 which controls contacts 43, these controlling the main supply relay 44.
