678,057. Jigs. COSENS, L. March 13, 1951 [June 6, 1950], No. 14127/50. Class 60. A jig for grinding lathe and like cutting tools comprises a block having at each end tool-holding means and a set of plane surfaces disposed parallel with and opposite to the respective required faces of the tool, each surface serving as a base to rest on the table of a surface grinder while the corresponding tool face is being ground. Tools of circular cross section are clamped in a bore 18 by a screw 19, while tools of square cross section may be clamped in a slot 22 by a bar secured at each end by bolts in threaded engagement with holes 26a in the block. If tools for cutting screw threads are to be ground, the angle between the faces 13, 15 may correspond to that of a Whitworth thread while the angle between the faces 13a, 15a corresponds to that of American and metric threads. The surfacet grinder may be provided with a magnetic chuck to hold the jig by each of the faces 13, 15 or 13a, 15a in turn while the grinding wheel produces the corresponding faces on the tool. The faces 14, 14a may be used to obtain a flat at the nose of the tool. All of the faces are tapered towards the top of the body of the jig to produce clearance on the cutting edges of the tool. For the treatment of boring bars an intermediate member 31 is used. This has a shank 32 which is held in the bore 18 and an eye 33 in which the tool shank is clamped by a grub screw.
