Abstract
677,372. Endless conveyers. SKODOVY ZAVODY PLZEN, NARODNI PODNIK, and BASUS, J. June 14, 1950. [June 14, 1949] No. 14859/50. Class 78 (i). In a packing machine for cigarettes or similarly shaped articles which comprises a counting or grouping device, the speed of a conveyer which feeds the articles from a supply hopper 1 to a casing containing the device is controlled in dependence upon the quantity of articles within said casing so as to maintain said quantity between predetermined limits. Cigarettes pass through a hole 20 in the base of the supply hopper 1 the feed being controlledby an adjustable trimming wheel 21 which spreads them on endless belt 3 driven by a motor 8. The cigarettes are discharged from belt 3 into casing 11 where they fall into grouping channels 12 for feeding the packing machine. A plate 13 within the casing is mounted on a shaft 14 which carries outside the casing a mercury switch 15 consisting of an arcuate tube having three contacts 16, 17 and 18. Plate 13 rests against the cigarettes as they flow into the chamber. With the packing machine working at full capacity, as illustrated, contacts 16 and 17 are joined by the mercury, these completing an electric circuit to the motor 8 so that it runs at high speed. When the packing machine cannot cope with the supply of cigarettes plate 13 is pushed away from the end of the conveyer belt which causes the mercury to join contacts 16, 18. This also completes a circuit to motor 8 but through a resistance so reducing the speed of belt 3. If the packing machine stops the accumulation of cigarettes moves the mercury onto contact 18 only thus stopping the motor. If, with the packing machine working to capacity the supply of cigarettes from hopper 1 stops or is small the mercury moves onto contact 17 only thus also stopping the motor, this indicating either that hopper 1 is empty or that the position of trimmer 21 needs adjusting.
