Abstract
676,702. Thermal switches. DAVIDSON, A. D., and SCAMMELL, E. W. Sept. 18, 1950. [Sept. 17, 1049] No. 23983/49. Class 38 (v). [Also in Group XIII] An automatic cut-out for a kettle or other electrically heated appliance comprises a U- shaped bimetallic strip, the arms 16 of which have claws 17 engaging behind the head 19b of a needle 19, so that when overheated the arms move apart releasing the needle which, together with an insulating block 18 supporting it, moves rapidly to the left breaking the circuit. The bimetal strip is mounted on a support 8 with a concave floor 11 against which it is pressed by means of a nut 13. Screwing up the nut deflects the arms 16 towards each other thus varying the temperature at which the cut-out operates. In the form shown the block carries contacts 27 which disengage fixed contacts 25. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the movement of the block 18 ejects an adaptor or socket member.
