Abstract
Hydrogen chloride is oxidized by passing a gaseous stream containing oxygen, e.g. air, and hydrogen chloride over a body of chromic oxide, at least part of which is prepared at a temperature of less than 500 DEG C and referred to as "dark unglowed" amorphous chromic oxide, with or without an inert carrier, maintained at 340-480 DEG C, and recovering chlorine. The inert carrier may be pumice, silica, silica gel, clay, alumina, activated alumina, or silica-alumina. The catalyst body may be prepared by impregnating the inert carrier with aqueous chromic acid, which is dehydrated to chromium trioxide and reduced in hydrogen at 400 DEG C or less to chromic oxide, or by intimately mixing an aqueous slurry of carrier and chromic oxide, drying and breaking up the resultant solid. The catalyst may consist of 10-50 per cent chromic oxide and 50-90 per cent activated alumina. The proportion of hydrochloric acid to air should be 1:0.48 to 1:3 and the gas mixture may be passed at the rate of 300-750 volumes per volume of catalyst per hour. The catalyst may be used as a fixed or fluidized bed.
