675,855. Electromagnets. SOUTH WALES SWITCHGEAR, Ltd., LAMB, H. A., and TERRY, R. G. Jan. 6, 1950 [Jan. 7, 1949], No. 524/49. Class 35. In a plunger type electromagnet, electromagnetic means effective in dependence on the position of the plunger are provided for holding the plunger in the unattracted position after the winding has been energized until the flux density in the main magnetic circuit has reached a predetermined value. As shown, the extension 1a of the housing and the disc 14 on the plunger 4 provide a lowreluctance path which holds the plunger in the lower position until the flux has built up in the main magnetic circuit including the core 12 which is struck by the rising plunger, the airgap thereby produced between flanges 12a and 1b causing a retarding action. In a modi. fication the lower end of the plunger is hollowed out to accommodate an additional coil which sets up flux in a local circuit including the extension 1a for holding the plunger while the main flux builds up.
