Abstract

675,549. Optical viewing devices. COPELAND, J. C. Oct. 6, 1950 [Oct. 28, 1949], No. 24480/50. Addition to 562,077. Class 97 (i). In an optical viewing device of the kind set out in the parent Specification, the height of the spherical mirror as measured at right angles to the axis of the mirror and in that axial plane which intersects the semi-transparent mirror at right angles is less than 0.94 times the focal length F of the spherical mirror. As shown in Fig. 1, the viewer comprises a lamp house 10 enclosing a lamp 11 and supporting a housing 12. The latter accommodates a semi-transparent mirror 22 and a front surface spherical mirror 25, and is apertured at 24. Supported between two glass or plastic sheets 20 in an aperture between the housings 10, 12 is the transparent or opaque picture which may be illuminated by a lamp 11 or lamps 36, 37. The supports 20 for the picture are movable under the control of a knob 19c by screw means 19. When the mirror 25 has a height greater than 0.94 F, masking plates are provided to block out parts thereof and reduce the height of the reflecting part of the mirror preferably to 0.8 F. Preferably, one of the mirrors 22, 25 has a curved top edge to permit said edge to follow closely the adjacent surface of the other mirror. In another form, the picture support is fixed and the spherical mirror is movable axially. Instead of providing lamps 11, 36 and 37 and the supports 20, a cathode-ray tube may be positioned with its screen in the aperture between the housings 10, 12.
