Abstract
674,992. Rolling-mills. NORLINDH, S.E.M. Sept. 28, 1949, No. 24865/49. Class 83 (iv). In a universal rolling mill having two or more horizontal rolls 1, 2, 3 and at least one pair of vertical rolls 4, 5 and in which the bearing boxes 2a carrying the horizontal rolls support the bearing boxes 4a, 5a for the vertical rolls 4, 5, the horizontal roll bearing boxes 2a carry the drive devices for the vertical rolls and means for adjusting the vertical rolls and the feed guides therefor, these feed guides being linked to the bearing box of the diagonally opposite vertical roller. The vertical rolls 4, 5 are driven from a gear 2c fixed on the head 2b of roll 2 through a gear 6, mounted on the end of a splined shaft 7, a bevel gear 5d, displaceably mounted on shaft 7 and bevel gear 5c. The bearing boxes 4a, 5a are slidably mounted on vertically adjustable guides 2e, 2f secured to the bearing boxes 2a and are attached to the input guides 4e, 5e displaceably fixed on a guide rest bar 2d vertically adjustable in grooves on the bearing boxes 2a by bolts 26 at the opposite side of the horizontal rolls 1, 3. The spacing between the vertical rolls 4, 5 is adjusted by three screws 9 driven by a motor and gearing (not shown) through a chain 10a and gear 10. The position of the input guide 4e is controlled by the movement of the bearing box 5a through rod 5f, lever 5g and rod 4h and that of the input guide 5e through rod 4f, lever 4g and rod 5h. The rods 4h, 5h are connected to the input guides 4e, 5e by levers 4o, 5o through resilient connections 4p, 5p respectively to push the guides 4e, 5e apart and through set screws 4k, 5k to push them towards one another. Upper and lower scrapers 1g, 2g are arranged between the horizontal and vertical rolls. The scraper 2g rests on the vertical roll bearing boxes 4a, 5a and the scraper 1g is mounted on a member 1e by means of a spring-loaded rod 1f attached to the bearing boxes 1a of the top horizontal roll 1. The vertical rolls 4, 5 are parallel with each other but diverge upwardly at about 2 degrees from the vertical plane passing through the centres of rolls 1, 3 to force the strip passing therethrough downwards on to rollers 4r, 5r. In rolling mills having three or more horizontal rolls 1, 3 in which rolling occurs at the centre between rolls 1 and 2 and towards the outer edges between rolls 2 and 3, lateral guides 4n, 4m are connected to the vertical roll bearing 4a, and 5n, 5m to bearing 5a to follow the same when the spacing between the rolls 4, 5 is adjusted. The middle horizontal roll bearings 2a are fixed in posts 1r and are connected with the bearing la by screws 15, 16 which are adjusted by gear wheels 15a, 15b and 16a, 16b driven by worm wheels rotated by worms on a shaft so driven by a motor 22. The bearing boxes 2a, 3a are interconnected in a similar manner by screws and gears driven by a motor 22b mounted at the mill base. Specifications 587,457 and 603,329 are referred to.
