Abstract

Cyanagen chloride is produced by continuously reacting chlorine with a solution of hydrocyanic acid in a reaction column through which the solution is continuously recirculated. Concentrated hydrocyanic acid is introduced at b into packed column a through which a 2-3 per cent aqueous hydrocyanic acid solution is continuously recirculated by pump d. Water flowing from f, through packed washing column e, <PICT:0674813/III/1> in to a, and reaction with chloride introduced at c; maintain the hydrocyanic acid concentration in the circulating solution approximately constant. Cyanogen chloride vapour is withdrawn through washing column e, to remove any hydrocyanic acid, and tower k containing a non-alkaline drying agent, e.g. calcium chloride, silica or alumina gel, some of the circulating liquid is withdrawn to stripping column g and vapours of cyanogen chloride and hydrocyanic acid are returned to column a at h, while dilute hydrochloric acid is withdrawn at i. Specification 601,701 is referred to.
