Abstract
Loose powders containing zirconium sulphate, and suitable for direct use in tanning, pretanning or after-tanning, are prepared by reacting sodium zirconium silicate with sulphuric acid in a concentration of 30% to 70%, by weight, at a temperature of up to 80 DEG C. while stirring, in amounts such that the ratio, by weight, of zirconium (calculated as ZrO2) to sulphate (calculated as H2SO4), in the zirconium sulphate formed, is from 1:1 to 1:2.2, separating the undecomposed zirconium silicate portion, and subjecting the still liquid mixture, having a solids content of 30 to 60% by weight, to spray-drying.ALSO:Loose powders containing zirconium sulphate are prepared by reacting sodium zirconium silicate with sulphuric acid in a concentration of 30% to 70% by weight at a temperature of up to 80 DEG C. while stirring and in amounts such that the ratio by weight of zirconium (calculated as ZrO2) to sulphate (calculated as H2SO4), combined as zirconium sulphate formed, is from 1:1 to 1:2.2, separating the undecomposed zirconium silicate portion, and subjecting the still liquid mixture which has a solids content of 30 to 60% by weight to spray drying. The sodium zirconium silicate is preferably reacted in the form of an aqueous suspension at a concentration of 0.5 to 1.2 kg. per litre of water. The process may be continuous and the reaction time, with sulphuric acid of concentration 50% by weight, is up to 10 minutes. The reaction mixture may be cooled to 20 DEG C. to 50 DEG C. before drying.
