Abstract

588,110. Two-part couplings. JACKSON, D., and PYE, Ltd. Nov. 21, 1944, No. 23099. [Class 38 (i)] In a moulded connector for terminating small coaxial cables, the plug portion, Fig. 1, comprises a tubular metal shell 5 forming the outer contact reduced in diameter at its inner end 7 so as to be embraced by the outer conductor 2 of the cable. Concentric with the shell 5 is an inner contact comprising a tubular metal socket 6 into the inner end of which the inner conductor 1 of the cable is secured, the outer end being split at 13 and surrounded by a spring collar 14 to make it resilient. An insulating body 11 is moulded round the inner end of the plug, and the cable insulation 4, the insulating material flowing through holes 12 in the shell 5 and filling the inside thereof. In the socket portion of the connector, Fig. 2, (not shown), the outer shell is made larger so as to embrace the shell 5 and is also split and surrounded by a spring collar to make it resilient, the central contact comprising a pin for engaging the socket 6. The insulating body 11 terminates at the inner end of the central contact pin so as to allow the plug to enter the outer shell. The connector may be locked together by a bayonet connection, Fig. 6, comprising four diametrically opposed longitudinal grooves formed on the shell 5, two of which 31 extend from the outer edge thereof to a peripheral groove 32 and engage lugs 34 on the inside of the socket portion when the plug is inserted. therein, the plug then being turned to engage the lugs in the other two grooves 33 which extend part way along the shell from the groove 32. Fig. 5 shows a socket for mounting on a panel 21, the outer contact shell 20 being clamped thereon by insulating washers 23, 26 carrying the central contact pin 22. A spring clip 29 may be provided engaging a shoulder 30 on the shell 5 so as to retain the latter in the socket. Two such sockets may be mounted back to back to form a double-ended socket.
