Abstract

Fibre-boards &c. are made from e.g. beechwood shavings, or pine wood chips which may have been boiled with water, e.g. for 10 minutes at 4 atmospheres pressure, until the pH value is 5 to 6, and washed, by softening the lignin in a two-stage process, the first stage being impregnation, preferably under vacuum, with dilute lye, e.g. a 3.5 per cent solution of caustic soda, so that 2 to 7 per cent of alkali is absorbed, and the second being heating by vapour or superheated steam so as to make the lignin easily fusible, but insoluble in water, the material being then disintegrated.
