In a shaving apliance of the type which includes means for supplying liquid to the skin when the appliance is brought close to the face, manually controlled means for rendering the blade operative or inoperative, at will, are provided. The means for wetting the skin may be a wetting sector or sectors as described in Specification 672,947, and to facilitate shaving one or more wetting strokes, during which the blade is masked, are made between each shaving stroke. As shown a blade 2 is supported on the movable centre part 6 of a base 3 and can be advanced, after the skin has been wetted by a wetting section in an aperture 22 in the casing 4, by finger-pressure on the spring-urged arms 17, from the masked position shown to a cutting position free of the base 3. In modifications the blade is unmasked by the withdrawal of guard members, mounted on pivoted levers, or of a protector plate which is spring-urged down a ramp, formed as part of a retractable frame, or of a protector formed as a longitudinal component of a frame, the lateral components of which are circular arcs sliding in grooves, the blade-carrying head being swivelled or disconnected and rotated through 180 degrees to bring a fresh cutting edge into shaving position. In a further modification the blade is normally in shaving position and is pivotally connected to a frame retractable against spring pressure the blade being honed against a hone surface provided on the lower guard member.
