Abstract
672,917. Air intakes for aircraft. BLACKBURN & GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. May 25, 1950 [May 5, 1949], No. 12067/49. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] An air intake for the turbine propulsion unit of an aircraft comprises a duct of adequate crosssectional area to supply the propulsion unit's maximum requirements, provided with one or more hinged members at the inlet thereto which is or are capable of being swung outwardly from the normal position to increase the inlet area of such duct, which is suitable for high speed flight. The arrangement ensures an adequate supply of air to the propulsion unit during low speed flight or when running on the ground. In the embodiment shown the forward portions 5, 6 of inlet ducts disposed on opposite sides of the fuselage are movable about hinges at their rearward ends by means of jacks 9, 10. The portions 5, 6 are so shaped that their leading edges define cross sectional areas suitable for high speed flight in the normal position shown in full lines.
