In a typewriter having a letter-spacing mechanism including a number of interconnected escapements selectively operated for variably controlling the carriage movements in accordance with the width of the letters, one escapement effects a spacing which is an aliquot amount of any of the letter spacings, and the back spacing mechanism is arranged to backspace that mechanism a like aliquot amount. The mechanism is the same as that included in the machine described in Specification 672,633. Specification 657,842, [Group XXXV], also is referred to.
