Abstract
672,396. Making lock-nuts. GRIP NUT CO. March 22, 1950, No. 7192/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXV] in the manufacture of lock-nuts triangular depressions 23, 25, 27, Fig. 3, are pro. duced in the top faces of the nuts by a punch having plane faces 35, 36, 37, Fig. 5, ground to an angle of 77¢ degrees, Fig. 6, with the axis and intersecting in radial lines 38 spaced at 120 degrees. The angle shown as 77¢ may vary from sixty to eighty-two degrees. The nut may be grooved to provide a weakened section 17 that compresses under the punch pressure and throws the threads, in the top end of the nuts, out of lead. The punch may be ground with six faces spaced at sixty degrees apart. In a modification the punch may be ground with a central flat surface 67 perpendicular to the axis to produce depressions, in the nuts, having flat V-shaped bottoms. U.S.A.
