Abstract

A flux, of the type used in arc welding where the arc is submerged in a layer of the flux deposited along the line to be welded, comprises a major proportion of one or more of the silicates of calcium, manganese, magnesium and aluminium in the form of a granular, prefused material also containing in chemically combined form an amount, not exceeding 1 per cent by weight, of lead, bismuth or antimony. A fluoride, e.g. cryolite, calcium fluoride, aluminium fluoride or sodium fluoride may be present up to 15 per cent by weight.
