Class 18 A knock-down container for shipment of goods comprises base and top elements 20, 21 of similar surface area, four side walls 22-25 so dimensioned that two walls substantially cover the base when the container is collapsed, Fig. 2, mutually interfitting means in the elements both in erect and collapsed condition and means for connecting the parts in both positions, each element being formed by a framework of cold-drawn sectional members welded to a sheet-metal base. As shown, the base and top have pins such as 36, Fig. 9, for engagement in holes formed in the lower and upper framework of the side walls, the pins being apertured near their ends to receive locking keys such as 71, Fig. 9. which may be attached to their related walls by a link 72 and may have a hole 73 for sealing purposes. When the container is collapsed, the pins enter holes in the sides of the side walls and the top and base 20, 21 are tied together, with the side walls between them, by screw tie rods 40 which are pivoted to the top and are connected to base lugs 39, the tie rods being accommodated in lugs 68 of the top 21 when the container is erected. As shown in Fig. 13, two side walls may have their framework directed inwardly and intermediate braces have slots 47 to receive pins on the ends of members 48, 49 which may support partitioning boards 74. The base is provided with legs 35 and lifting rings 37 and the top, which is ridged and carries sling guides, is provided with shims 58, 59 and reinforcing strips 57 respectively to locate and support the legs of a superimposed container, when stacking. The wall panels may be lined with wood or may have a fireproof coating and they may have ventilation apertures. Roller or castor bearing shoes may be applied to the legs 35.
