670,666. Pipe couplings. AVERY-HARDOLL, Ltd., and FRASER, J. July 20, 1950 [Aug. 2, 1949], No. 20129/49. Class 99 (i) Relative turning movement, as by a handwheel 45, of coupling parts 10, 11 causes valves 17, 57 to be opened or closed, when the parts are coupled or disconnected, by cam-and-follower mechanism in one of the parts and which may comprise a bar 65 pivotally mounted on a stem 66 slidable through the valve 57 and carrying rollers 64 that engage in diametrically-opposed slots 63 in a skirt 58 integral with the valve 57 and axially-movable in and rotatable with the part 11. Coupling of the parts causes the rollers to travel along the slots so that oppositelydirected thrusts on the stem and skirt urge the stem and valve 17 into part 10 and the skirt and valve 57 inwardly of part 11. Rotation of the valves may be prevented by projections 69 of the stem head 68 engaging in recesses 36 of the valve 17 that is provided with radial projections 21 axially-slidable in slots 19 of a valve-seating disc 16 secured to part 10. There may be a flange 14 of part 10 that is provided with slots 15 through which pass rollers 43 in the socket of part 11 the rotational movement of which, to bring the rollers into a groove 32, is limited by projections extending into circumferential cutaway portions in the edge of the disc 16. A hose attachment adapter 49 may be rotatably secured in the part 11. The valves may be spring-biased towards the closed position and in such a manner that one valve is unseated before the other.
