The cop 22 being wound is gripped between conical elements 5, 30 held in the respective plates 4, 23, the cop being driven by the spindle 11 through a gripping device 6 of dished form. The element 30, during winding is supported by a reciprocable counterspindle 31 spring-pressed at 32. The empty cop-tube 21 carried between heads 5<SP>1</SP>, 30<SP>1</SP> on the plates 4, 23, and fed into position from a pivotable magazine (not shown), is held in place by spring- pressure and ready to be forwarded to the winding position when the holder is rotated, through a one-way clutch 13, by rack and pinion mechanism 15, 18. While winding is in progress a stop 17 presses against the shaft 2 and a further stop 35 against the plate 23. When the cop 22 is completed, mechanism (not shown) withdraws the spindle 31 against the spring 32 and withdraws the stop 17. The spring 16 then moves the shaft 2 together with the plates 4, 23 to remove the head 5 from the driving spindle 11. As the plate 23 moves away from the stop 35, the spring 28 moves the plate about the pivot 25. The movement of the plate 4 removes it from the action of bars 38, which prevented rotation of the holder during winding, and a lug 37 on the traversing drum 36 contacts an arm 39<SP>11</SP> at the end of a wind, to move a locking projection 39<SP>1</SP> from the plate 4 to allow the rack and pinion mechanism 15, 18 to rotate the holder through 180 degrees into contact with a plate 41 to bring the tube 21 into winding position and allow removal of the full bobbin. The stop 17 now moves upwardly to lift the shaft 2 and force the head 5<SP>1</SP> towards the driving spindle 11, and the spindle 31 is moved against the element 30<SP>1</SP>. The traversing drum has returned to its initial position so that the yarn is caught up by the gripper and winding begins afresh.
