Abstract

505,947. Winding yarns ; bobbins. SCHARER - NUSSBAUMER & CO. July 5, 1938, Nos. 19883, 19884, and 19885. Convention, dates, Oct. 28, 1937, Dec. 21, 1937, and March. 7, 1938. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] In a yarn winding machine in which, by the turning of a common carrier, a full bobbin at the end of the winding operation is moved from the winding position and an empty bobbin moves to take its place, the full bobbin is given a terminal winding at the tip by means of a retaining member on the bobbin carrier as the full bobbin is moved from the winding position; the thread during the turning of the carrier being brought into the range of the thread deflector which engages the thread and moves it laterally into the path of a thread catching device on the moving empty bobbin or its spindle so that it is caught thereby for the starting of the new winding. As shown in Fig. 1, the retaining members or hooks 12, 12<1> for the spindles 6, 6<1> respectively are carried by a plate 10 connected by a tube 11 on the stationary shaft 4 with the plate 1 of the bobbin carrier. The bobbin carrier is moved during the winding, in the manner described in Specification 467,301 and at the end of the winding the thread is moved by the reciprocating guide 13 into the hook 12 so that as the full bobbin 8 is moved from the winding position a winding is wound on the tip of the bobbin by the rotation thereof on its own axis. As the bobbin 8 is being wound a barbed needle 14, forming the thread deflector and carried by a rod slidable in the carrier plates 1, 2 and projecting through a notch in a fixed disc 17, has been pushed by an abutment 16, during the longitudinal movement of the carrier, through the notch against the action of a compression spring 15 and at the end of the winding operation it is carried with the plates 1, 2, from the winding position with its end engaging the disc 17 while the barbed needle 14<1>, Fig. 6, associated with the empty bobbin is moved by its spring 15<1>, as the empty bobbin reaches the winding position, through the notch in the disc 17 and carries the thread leading from the thread guide 13 to the tip of the full bobbin 8 into the path of a rotating catch 19<1> on the empty bobbin 8<1> or its spindle 6' which is then being driven by the endless belt described in the above-mentioned Specification; the thread thus becomes wound around the empty bobbin while it is also broken between the two bobbins. The spindle driving heads may be provided with thread-catching devices which clamp the thread against the head of the spindle rotating the empty bobbin and, as shown in Figs. 9, and 10, the clamp comprises a curved leaf spring 28 fixed at one end 29 in a recess 27 at the end of the spindle head 7 and having a weight 30 at its other end. The wall of the recess 27 is formed with a slot 31 ending in notch 31' and as the thread is drawn by the barbed needle 14<1> into the path of the head 7<1> it passes into the notch 31<1> and the spring 28 moves outwards under centrifugal force to clamp the thread against the inside of the recess 27; the thread is, at the same time, cut by a knife edge on the spring 28. In another form the clamp is formed by a ring disposed in a recess in the outer wall of the head, one end of the ring being formed as a thread catch and the other end being spaced from the floor of the groove so that it can move towards the floor and clamp the thread as the head rotates. In a further form the clamp is formed by a wing freely pivoted in the recess 27 and in a still further form by a two-part ring disposed in the recess 27, one part of the ring being fixed and confining the other part which can move to clamp the thread as the head rotates.
