Abstract

670,316. Lighter. TAN-ANSTALT. Feb. 6, 1948 [May 24, 1947]. No. 3569/48. Classes 75(i) and 75(iii). A lighter having a wick tube which projects from the top of the main casing and is surrounded in spaced relation thereto by a ring member 5 secured on the top plate 2 has the space 5a between the wick tube and the ring connected to the interior of the container by a pipe having a widened cross-section over a part of its length. The wick tube 3 projects through a cover 2 from the interior 1a of a liquid container 1. A pipe 9 opens at one end 8 into the annular chamber 5a formed between the wick tube 3 and its surrounding ring 5 fixed to the cover 2, and at the other end enters a hollow space 11 formed by an enclosure 10 from which a further pipe 12 opens at 13 into the contained interior 1a. The space 5a is closed by sealing means 6 when the lighter cover 7 is shut. A burner-piece 3b moved vertically within space 5a by a spring 23 is saturated with fuel from the wick 4. For a lighter having a container filled with an absorbent material the hollow space 17 Fig. 2 is formed by a perforated sleeve 18. In a further arrangement shown in Fig. 3 the pipe 9a is connected to the top of a space 11a formed by an enclosure 10a and a pipe 12a leaves the bottom of the enclosure 10a and then rises to terminate at 13 below cover 2. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also Fig. 5 (Cancelled) an arrangement in which pipes 20 and 21 replace pipe 12 and respectively extend one at each end of the enclosure 10, into the interior 1a of the fuel container almost to the top or bottom wall thereof; the interior ends of the pipes 20, 21 are adapted to be closed by a valve arrangement comprising plastic balls 22a one or other of which covers the openings of either pipe 20 or 21 depending upon which is the lowermost according to the position in which the lighter is held. The balls 22a are separated by intervening steel balls 22 and consist of a substance, such as synthetic resin, which swells slightly in petrol and which has the property of adhering, under slight pressure, to the steel balls 22 or to the openings of tubes 20, 21 to seal the same. The ball 22a at the uppermost pipe drops away a short time after reversal of the lighter and closure of the now lowermost pipe 21 or 20. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
